Djinn higher than Poltergeist? I liked Djinn but it doesn't make my Tobe Hooper top ten.

I love love love Djinn. I find it weird and eccentric and brilliant. It's a shame what people are seeing isn't Hooper's version of the film. Poltergeist is almost-brilliant for me. Its script is a little too scripty.

Djinn: Unreleased Cut? Have you seen it? What are the major differences between this cut and the one that was released? Is the ending different? The released ending feels disjointed, like it's a reshoot, is it?

Damien - I have seen it. I was lucky enough to see it in a very early test screening in 2012. The ending is a reshoot, he shot none of that stuff once the two protagonists are outside on the roof. There are other substantial differences, such as added scenes that were also reshoots and cut/altered scenes. I'm hoping some clause allows Hooper to put his version out there soon. Fingers crossed.

Hello! Obviously, I am coming to this discussion late, but I've compiled my list below. I know the production history of DJINN is fraught, and I'd love to see the extended/director's cut, but my list must be based on the current cut. I've added a couple of Hooper's documentaries because I think they merit placement. And, though Hooper's TV work outside of his PETER, PAUL AND MARY doc and the cable productions aren't listed here, I think some of them merit inclusion. Perhaps we need a "Score Card" for Hooper's TV work? Thanks for doing this. Anyway, here is my list, with respect:

1. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre - 10/10
2. The Funhouse - 9/10
3. Poltergeist 9/10
4. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 - 9/10
4. Peter, Paul and Mary: The Song Is Love - 9/10
5. “Down Friday Street” - 9/10
6. Salem’s Lot - 9/10
7. Lifeforce - 8.5/10
8. Invaders from Mars - 8/10
9. Toolbox Murders - 8/10
10. Spontaneous Combustion - 7.5/10
11. Masters of Horror: “The Damned Thing” - 7.5/10
12. “Eye” 7.5/10
13. Eaten Alive - 7.5/10
14. Eggshells - 7/10
15. Mortuary - 7/10
16. “The Heisters” - 7/10
17. Night Terrors - 6.5/10
18. The Mangler - 6.5/10
19. I’m Dangerous Tonight - 6.5/10
20. Djinn (DVD/Blu-ray cut) - 6/10
21. Crocodile - 6/10
22. The Apartment Complex - 5/10
23. Masters of Horror: “Dance of the Dead” - 5/10

The previous post was by me. I have no idea why it made me "anonymous."

Thank you for your contribution! It's an invaluable resource, from an expert (no arguments)! Should mark it as a "Special Guest List."

Well, obviously this is 5 years old, and the list on the front page started even older, and I was still very interested in gaining Hooper his unheard-of legitimacy. Thus, the "objective" ratings. Now I know 2/10 is no longer feasible a rating and I commend you having more perspicacity than 5-years-prior me. Crocodile not last is totally valid (though I do really like Apartment Complex).

The documentary work certainly deserves to be there, and a TV list has been long in order.

Your list is full of interesting surprises! We all love The Funhouse, which is great. Just emphasizes how rich his filmography that it's impossible to pinpoint where to start. The "Peter, Paul, and Mary" doc has blossomed exponentially in my opinion just over the past year, and seeing you rate his three Cannon works so high, I'd be interested in what edges out one over the other. I also love his "Eye" segment (clearly the best in the film, to me, though I am also a huge Carpenter fan). Finally, your defense against criticisms made towards his Masters of Horror: "The Damned Thing" has suddenly become very important. :P

My very quickly drafted new list as of this second:

1. The Funhouse - 9/10
2. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre - 9/10
3. Spontaneous Combustion - 9/10
4. Djinn (Director's Cut) - 8.5/10
5. Lifeforce - 8.5/10
6. Salem's Lot - 8.5/10
7. Toolbox Murders - 8.5/10
8. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 - 8/10
9. Eaten Alive - 8/10
10. Mortuary - 7.5/10
11. Peter, Paul, and Mary: Song is Love - 7.5/10
12. Eggshells - 7.5/10
13. Invaders from Mars - 7/10
14. Night Terrors - 7/10
15. Down Friday Street - 7/10
16. Masters of Horror: "Dance of the Dead" - 7/10
17. Masters of Horror: "The Damned Thing" - 7/10
18. The Apartment Complex - 6.5/10
19. The Heisters - 6.5/10
20. "Eye" - 6.5/10
21. I'm Dangerous Tonight - 6/10
22. Crocodile - 6/10

Not to sound too contrarian but Eaten Alive might be vying to usurp Chain Saw for that number one slot for me...

JR said...

Kevin - You know, I may be coming around to your perspective... I've become a bit impervious to Texas Chain Saw's scrappy, odds-and-ends production and may prefer luxuriating in the full-on (even if it was embattled) production of Eaten Alive, also! And that soundtrack.

I am Sure this has been asked 1 billion times, but is there a Djinn Directors cut available anywhere?
